Cleaning leather is simple — as long as you're gentle and skip the harsh products. Here's exactly how to do it safely at home, step by step.

Before you start
Always test on a hidden spot first (inside a strap or under the base). Empty the bag, and gather a few soft microfiber cloths, mild soap, and a leather conditioner. That's it — no household sprays.
Step 1 — Dust it off
Wipe the whole bag with a dry microfiber cloth to remove loose dirt. Get into the seams and corners where grime collects.
Step 2 — Gentle clean
Dampen (don't soak) a cloth with water and a tiny bit of mild soap. Wipe in gentle circles, section by section, then go over it with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap. Dry immediately with a soft towel.
Step 3 — Tackle marks & stains
- Scuffs: a dedicated leather cleaner and light buffing usually lift them.
- Grease: sprinkle a little cornstarch, leave overnight, then brush away.
- Ink or color transfer: stop — these are best left to a professional.
Step 4 — Condition
Once fully dry, apply a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth in thin, even coats. This restores moisture and keeps the leather supple. Less is more — over-conditioning can darken leather.
Step 5 — Let it rest
Let the bag air dry and rest away from direct sunlight and heat before using or storing it. Never speed-dry with a hair dryer.
The golden rule of leather: gentle products, light pressure, and patience. Harsh cleaners cause most of the damage people are trying to undo.
What to avoid
Skip alcohol, disinfecting wipes, all-purpose cleaner, vinegar, and kitchen oils. They strip finish, dry out or darken leather, and can cause permanent damage.
